However, naming the father would mean bringing down the pillar of the community in the form of the minister, who has himself decided to remain silent. ![]() The only way they will allow her to remove the letter is if she names the father of her child. As a punishment for her crime, the community determines that she should be doomed to always wear a scarlet letter A on her bodice to announce to all who see her that she is an adulteress. In the fictional novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne, the story is told of a young Puritan woman who finds herself pregnant with the minister’s child at a time when she is married to a man who has been missing for seven years. ![]()
